harlem renaissance
the harlem renaissance lasted from 1910 to the mid 1930s and was the development of the harlem neighbourhood within New York city, developing as a black cultural Mecca. this period of time was considered a golden age in African American culture as it manifested in literature, stage performance and art. encompassed poetry and prose, painting and sculpture, jazz and swing, opera and dance. what united these diverse art forms was their realistic presentation of what it meant to be black in America, what writer Langston Hughes called an 'expression of our individual dark-skinned selves,' as well as a new militancy in asserting their civil and political rights.

the black panthers, also known as the black panther party was a political organisation founded in 1966 by Huey newton and bobby seale to challenge police brutality against the African American community. members would dress in black berets and black leather jackets and organised armed citizen patrols of Oakland and other US cities. the black panthers reached its peak in 1968 however declined as a result of internal tensions , deadly shootouts and FBI occurrences. they consisted of roughly 2000 members. originally dubbed the black panther party for self-defence, the organisation was founded in October 1966. the black panthers early activities primarily involved monitoring police activities in black communities in Oakland and other cities.
